Write articles about your subject and submit them to article directories. The directories link back to your site as the author. Also, people read the articles and will be more likely to visit your site if they like what they read.

Having a website (or for that matter a business) is useless if you don't tell anyone about it. Its like making a flyer and keeping it in your house.

People pay lots of money for promotion, but you can do a fair amount for free.

Be active in your promotion and make sure you tell everybody about your website and tell them to tell people. When you are bordering on annoying, you are getting there.
